The 20-year-old from Germantown, TN, led the final 26 rounds to become the youngest winner in Chili Bowl Nationals history, adding a sixth Golden Driller from the prestigious Midget racing event to the Swindell family collection that already includes hardware from his father’s unmatched five wins. Cole Whitt finished second followed by Sammy Swindell who started last,

“The Kruser” held off the challenges of Jerry Coons, Jr., for the win, with Danny Stratton knocking off the rust of an idle year by battling past Chris Windom on the final round for the third and final lock-in position to Saturday night’s 50-lap Chili Bowl championship main event. Windom settled for fourth with Chad Boat rounding out the top five.

January 14....Riverside, California’s Darren Hagen, paced the final three laps atop the QuikTrip Center’s Tulsa Expo Raceway clay oval to top Thursday night’s 25-lap Bully Dog Qualifying main event at the 24th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals. Chasing Hagen to the stripe was the unheralded Tony Roney of Herculaneum, MO, with New Zealand’s Brad Mosen taking the third lock-in position to Saturday night’s main event.

January 14 (11:30a.m.)....Robert "Bob" Higman, whose lifelong devotion to the sport of midget car racing was legendary, passed away in a Lafayette, Ind., hospital on January 13, 2010. Born on January 29, 1925, he was 84.      Already heavily involved with the American Automobile Association (AAA)-sanctioned midget car events by the early 1950s, Higman's career continued through the entire span of the United States Auto Club (USAC), basically from the organization's formation in late 1955 up through to the present time.
But Higman's career as a participant is rather difficult to define, because not only was he a front-runner as either a chief mechanic or a car entrant-or both-for several decades, but his closest competition was often himself inasmuch as he typically prepared and maintained cars for several owners. It is estimated that one year in the Hut Hundred at Terre Haute, Ind., 12 of the 33 starters were Higman-prepared.Higman, who was inducted into the National Midget Racing Hall of Fame in 1995, is credited with three USAC Midget car titles as a chief mechanic/team manager, the drivers being Bob Wente in 1963, Mike McGreevy in 1966 and Larry Rice in 1973. He also masterminded no fewer than six runner-up seasonal finishes, Wente's title coming during a phenomenal five-year run in which he also placed second in 1960, '61, '62 and '64. Higman was both owner and chief mechanic for the first three, and mechanic for the latter, his other runner-up finishes coming with Dave Strickland in 1970 and Dana Carter in 1975.
Bob served on the USAC Board of Directors between 1961 and 1970, and thereafter on the safety board and a variety of competition commissions. In 1973, he was presented with USAC's Jim Blunk Award for contributions to midget car racing, only the third year in which the award had been in existence. In 1998, he was honored with the prestigious Eddie Edenburn Award for lifetime achievements in auto racing, an award presented each year since 1939 with the exception of those during WWII.

January 13....Kevin Swindell snared his first taste of Chili Bowl glory by wiring the field in Wednesday night’s 25-lap River Spirit Casino Qualifying Showdown main event at the QuikTrip Center’s Tulsa Expo Raceway. outdueled Cole Whitt for the lead in the opening rounds and led all the way to the checkered flag with Whitt in tow, as tenth-starter Brad Kuhn nipped Tim McCreadie at the stripe for the third and final lock-in position to Saturday night’s championship main event.

January 12....Zach Daum put the finishing touches on a spicy Chili Bowl opener with a dramatic last-corner pass of New Zealand’s Michael Pickens to win Tuesday night’s 25-lap Warren CAT Qualifying “A” Main event at the QuikTrip Center's Tulsa Expo Raceway. Daum and Pickens swapped the point several times along the way before “The Dauminator” crossed underneath the Kiwi shoe exiting turn four and surged into the lead to take the checkered flag that closed out the first of four qualifying nights at the 24th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals.
Also on Tuesday night, Missouri’s Brad Loyet backed up a 21-win season in 2009 by wiring the field in the 20-lap Vacuworx Race of Champions that featured past event winners and perennial contenders. While Daum and Pickens took the top two positions in the nightcap, California teen Shane Golobic snared the third and final lock-in position to Saturday night’s championship main event.
