Sun Prairie, WI
(11/26/03)----Aaron Fike became the first
repeat winner of the National Midget Driver of the Year Championship.
Despite finishing 26th in the season finale Turkey Night Grand Prix at
Irwindale Speedway, Fike edged J.J. Yeley by 43 points for the title. A
total of 194 events were run at 72 different tracks in 24 states over a
317 day period.
Fike, of Galeburg, Ill, scored five feature wins at:
Clermont, Ind (2), Irwindale, Calif, Sun Prairie, Wis, and South Boston,
Va. Yeley the USAC Triple Crown winner scored six wins, and marked the
third time he has placed in the top ten. Bobby East, 2001 Champion Tracy
Hines, Mike Hess, Badger Champion Davey Ray, Jay Drake, A.J. Fike, Chili
Bowl winner Dan Boorse, and Scott Hatton completed the top ten. Eight of
the top ten drivers were also in last years top ten.
A total of
524 drivers earned points during the season. Sean Caisse topped Brian
Olson by thirty points to capture the Design 500 Racewear National Midget
Rookie of the Year Award. In the National Midget Manufacturer of the Year
Award, Gaerte engines claimed the engine manufacture award for the third
straight year, while Stealth topped the point battle for chassis
builders.
