Prairie, WI (11/24/00)----By virtue of his second place finish in
Thursday Night's Turkey Nite Grand Prix, Kasey Kahne has emerged as
the 2000 Arizona Sport Shirts National Midget Driver of the
Year. Kahne entered the event with a slim 41 point lead over Jay
Drake. Drake finished 24th in the race, and second in overall
points.
Kahne,
of Enumclaw, WA had led the point standings since late May, and wound
up with nine feature wins, including victories in the Night before the
500, and the Belleville Midget Nationals. For Kahne the honor
comes in his first full season of racing midgets, last year he ran
five events and finished tied for 187th place in the Driver of the
Year points.
With
208 events run nationwide, Drake wound up as the winningest driver
with ten feature wins. Drake scored wins in USAC National, USAC
Western, Badger, and NAMARS sanctioned events. Kevin Doty with
five wins finished third in points, followed by Aaron Fike, Kevin
Olson, Dave Darland, Tracy Hines, Scott Hatton, A J Fike and Chad
DeSelle. Only Drake, Darland, and Hines finished in last year's
top ten.
Besides
Arizona Sport Shirts, as the title sponsor, other contingency sponsors
are: Design 500 Racewear, Georgia Marketing Promotions, National Speed
Sport News, and midgetmadness.com. The top ten drivers will
receive their awards prior to the start of the O'Reilly Chili Bowl, on
Saturday night January 13, 2001.
